Your piercing has been healed for months—or even years—and suddenly it’s sore, tender, or irritated. What gives?
The good news: a healed piercing can become irritated without necessarily meaning something is seriously wrong. Even established piercings can react to changes in pressure, jewelry, products, or your everyday routine.
Here are some of the most common reasons a healed piercing may suddenly start bothering you—and what to do about it.
1. You Slept on It
Sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one. Sleeping directly on a piercing can put hours of pressure on the area, especially with cartilage piercings.
You may wake up with tenderness, redness, or mild swelling even if the piercing has been comfortable for years.
Piercer Tip: Try sleeping on the opposite side and avoid putting unnecessary pressure on the piercing while it settles down.
2. Your Jewelry Got Snagged
Hairbrushes, towels, clothing, headphones, hats—we encounter plenty of things every day that can catch on our jewelry.
Even a small snag can irritate the piercing channel and leave the area feeling tender afterward.
Avoid twisting or repeatedly checking the jewelry, which can cause even more irritation.
3. Your Jewelry Fit Has Changed
Jewelry that once felt perfectly comfortable may no longer be the ideal fit. A post that's too long can create extra movement and snagging, while jewelry that's too tight can put unnecessary pressure on the piercing.
If your jewelry suddenly feels uncomfortable, don't immediately remove it yourself. Have a professional piercer evaluate the placement and fit first.
4. Your Products Could Be the Problem
Sometimes the culprit isn't the piercing—it's what's coming into contact with it.
Hair products, skincare, makeup, sunscreen, fragrance, and other products can build up around jewelry or irritate the surrounding skin.
Be mindful when applying products near your ears and keep your jewelry and piercing area clean.
5. Your Jewelry May Need Some Attention
Quality and material matter when it comes to body jewelry. If you've recently changed your jewelry and irritation followed, the new piece may be contributing to the problem.
The jewelry's material, shape, size, weight, or fit can all affect how comfortable a piercing feels.
A professional piercer can assess your jewelry and recommend a more appropriate option if needed.
6. Your Lifestyle Has Changed
Think about what's been different lately.
Have you started wearing over-ear headphones more often? Been traveling and sleeping on different pillows? Wearing a helmet or hat? Swimming frequently? Styling your hair differently?
Small changes in your routine can create new pressure, friction, or contact around a piercing without you realizing it.
Irritated or Infected?
Tenderness doesn't automatically mean infection. Irritation can cause symptoms such as localized redness, sensitivity, or mild swelling.
However, increasing pain, significant swelling, warmth, spreading redness, fever, or unusual discharge should be taken seriously. If you're concerned about a possible infection, seek medical care rather than attempting to diagnose or treat it yourself.
And don't remove jewelry from a potentially infected piercing without guidance from a qualified healthcare professional.
What Should You Do?
If a healed piercing suddenly becomes irritated, keep things simple:
- Avoid touching, twisting, or playing with the jewelry.
- Reduce pressure and friction around the area.
- Keep hair and beauty products away from the piercing.
- Don't change or remove the jewelry simply because it's irritated.
- Have a professional piercer check the placement, jewelry, and fit if the irritation continues.
Most importantly, listen to your piercing. Something that has been comfortable for years can still need a little extra attention from time to time.
