Seasonal Self-Care: Healing Your Piercings in Warmer Weather

Seasonal Self-Care

Healing Your Piercings in Warmer Weather

  • 3 min read

As the days get longer and the sun gets stronger, it’s important to adjust your piercing aftercare routine to fit the season. Warmer weather brings beach days, sweatier workouts, and more time outdoors—all of which can impact how your piercings heal. Whether you're rocking a brand-new helix or maintaining a well-loved conch, here’s how to keep your piercings happy and healthy all spring and summer long.

Protect Your Piercings from the Sun
Fresh piercings are especially sensitive to UV rays, which can cause discoloration, prolonged redness, or even scarring. When spending time outside, cover your piercing with a hat, your hair, or a breathable bandage if it’s exposed. Avoid applying sunscreen directly to the area until it’s fully healed, as the ingredients can irritate the piercing.

Be Mindful of Water Exposure
Pools, lakes, oceans, and even hot tubs may look tempting—but they’re full of bacteria that can interfere with healing. Avoid submerging new piercings for at least the first few months. If water exposure is unavoidable, rinse the area with saline afterward to reduce the risk of infection.

Sweat Happens—Stay Clean
Hot weather means more sweating, which can introduce bacteria into healing piercings. Make sure to gently clean your piercing after workouts or outdoor activities using a sterile saline solution or piercing-safe aftercare spray. Stick to breathable fabrics and avoid sleeping on healing ear piercings to reduce friction.

Choose Jewelry That Works with the Season
Heat and humidity can make jewelry feel extra snug, especially if there's swelling. Stick to implant-grade titanium or solid gold jewelry, which are hypoallergenic and less likely to cause irritation in sweaty or damp conditions. Avoid costume jewelry until your piercing is fully healed.

Check In with Your Piercer
Seasonal changes can impact how your body heals. If your piercing feels irritated or you're unsure about your progress, book a quick check-in with your piercer. They can advise on jewelry changes (like post downsizing) and help with any healing concerns.
